The landslide occurred at 11.20 am near Junglechatti Ghat along the route, with boulders rolling down the hillside, hitting pilgrims and palanquin and porter operators.

Police and District Disaster Relief Force (DDRF) teams quickly reached the spot, rescued the injured, and took them to Gaurikund for treatment.

Police and SDRF personnel as well as locals had a tough time pulling out the dead as well as the injured out of the gorge with the help of ropes.

Two persons died on the spot while three others, including a woman, were injured. The woman sustained minor injuries, while the seriously injured men were referred to a health centre in Gaurikund.

Earlier, on June 16, a helicopter carrying devotees to Kedarnath crashed. The helicopter crash killed seven people. However, helicopter services in the Kedarnath valley were suspended for a day after the crash.
