The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday directed the authorities in Maharashtra to ensure the "peaceful and vacant" handover of more than 24 acres of an alternative land parcel to a man whose land was "illegally" occupied more than six decades ago, news agency PTI reported.

The apex court also accepted the unconditional apology tendered by Rajesh Kumar, additional chief secretary of the forest and revenue department, against whom SC had issued a show cause notice on August 28. In the show cause notice, the court had asked why contempt action should not be initiated against Kumar for the "contemptuous remarks" made in an affidavit filed by the department.
