Australia's star batsman Steve Smith finds it challenging to play the role of opener in the Test but is eager to turn it around after going through a rough patch. Smith raised his hand up to fill in the vacant space after David Warner's retirement.

The move was indeed surprising since it diverted from the policy of appointing specialists for the opening role including Cameron Bancroft, Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris.
